Eligibility and Qualifying Guidelines

The NIKE INDOOR NATIONALS is a USATF sanctioned event and the meet requirement is simply that students are enrolled in high school or middle school.  Many states do allow student athletes to represent their schools outside the designed season and therefore students must compete unattached or for clubs.  Please check with your school administrator if you have questions about school or club representation.

Championship and Emerging Elite athletes are:

  • Full-time students in grades 9-12 born September 1, 2004 or later.

  • Home-schooled athletes who meet the age requirements.

  • Full-time students in grades 6-7-8 who are eligible to compete for a high school team in state association competition in winter or spring 2023-2024.

  • There are limited sections of Freshman and MS events.

  • Freshman athletes are encouraged to enter the EE or Championship sections if they meet the respective entry standards.

Freshman athletes are:

  • Full-time students in grade 9.

Middle School athletes are:

  • Full time students in grades 6-7-8.

All athletes must have been born September 1, 2004 or later. Grade refers to the athlete during the 2023/2024 indoor/outdoor season.

USATF membership is not required.

All registered relay teams will receive a commemorative custom baton.

Qualifying Guidelines

*All qualifying times must be FAT.  Hand times will not be accepted.

*Athletes must submit all entries under one single affiliation: High School, Club, or Unattached. If you plan to compete with a team, or on a relay, please submit an entry as either High School or Club, not Unattached. Switches from unattached to team attached will not be accommodated. If you have a separate team and unattached bios and you need to merge them, please follow THESE INSTRUCTIONS

*** Entry limits exist for all events and events will be filled by the first athletes who enter and have met the standard.  Meeting the entry standard does not mean automatic qualification.  Please do not delay in entering if you have met an entry standard. Once events fill, they will not re-open.

*** The pentathlon is limited to the first 12 paid entries per gender who meet the qualifying standard

The Nike Indoor Nationals will once again offer 4x200m and 4x400m Club Relays for athletes on the same club, but from different schools who wish to compete together. In the registration system, select Club Relay when selecting the division for these two events. The Club must be a team created within Athletic.net.

*Middle school is considered grades 6-8.

*All entry marks will be verified.  Meet results must be published on-line or a link to the result must be provided. Please include a link to the result in the comment section.

*When entering an event using a mark from a different event (example; entering the 800m using a 600m time) please leave your time blank and include the performance in the comments that you qualified via a different event along with a link to the results where that mark was achieved.

*If an athlete improves a performance after entering, the coach needs to update the entry in the Athletic.net system. If the improvement qualifies for the Championship division, email [email protected] and we will update the entry if there is space in the Championship division.

Altitude Adjustments:

Altitude adjusted entry times for events 800m and above will be accepted. To have your converted time considered, please use the altitude adjustment calculator found HERE to determine your entry time.  In your entry please note that the time has been converted, the altitude of the site, and a link to the results where the time was achieved.

Individual Qualifying:

  • Qualifying marks may be achieved in meets from the 2023-24 indoor season, or the 2023 OR 2024 outdoor seasons;

  • Athletes may qualify for the pentathlon with a composite of season bests from the 2023 outdoor or 2024 indoor seasons.  Note that the requirement for entry when using a composite score is higher than when using an actual multi score.  Please include a link in the comment section to the results for all PR’s when entering the multis.

  • No adjustments for flat to banked tracks are used;

  • Relay splits may not be used for entry for individual events, even if they are FAT;

  • 300 meter times may not be used to enter the 400 but may be used to enter the 200;

  • Similarly, 500 meter times may not be used to enter the 800, but may be used to enter the 400; 600m may be used for either the 400 or 800.

  • Altitude adjustments will be made by the Seeding Committee where appropriate.  We use the NCAA altitude conversion calculator. To ensure that an altitude adjustment is made where justified, send an email to [email protected] with the subject “Altitude Adjustment Request.”

  • Entries by the same individual in the same event, i.e. Championship and Emerging Elite 200, are not permitted.

Relay Qualifying:

  • Relay teams may qualify with marks from the 2023 - 2024 indoor season or 2023 outdoor season.  Qualifying marks from the 2023 outdoor season will be accepted only if the team is identical (exactly the same runners) to the one that ran the time;

  • A composite projection (consisting of in-season PR’s for each athlete) will be accepted in all relay events if the individual marks were made in the 2023 or 2024 outdoor or 2023-2024 indoor seasons. Please include a link to each athlete's mark in the comment section when entering.

  • PR’s for relay projections are actual meet results. Relay splits may not be used in the projection of composite relay times even if they are FAT.

  • For the distance medley, 1200 legs in a composite entry must have a 2023 or 2024 outdoor or 2023 – 2024 indoor season mark in the 1000, 1500, 1600 or mile.  Coaches may estimate the 1200 for a composite entry; however, NSAF reserves the right to make the final decision as to the time to be used in the composite.

Seeding Guidelines

  • Seeding decisions are made at the discretion of the Seeding Committee and Meet Management

  • Seeding is based on 2023 outdoor or 2023-2024 indoor season marks.  Marks from later meets (those closest to the Nike Nationals) will receive preference for seeding purposes;

  • Preference for heats and lanes will be given to relay teams that have an actual current season mark (versus a composite) where the actual and the composite are close.  Should a composite based on actual individual current season times be significantly faster than an actual relay times the composite will take precedence.  This decision will be made at the discretion of the seeding committee.
